Your project is a collection of files. Use the Project Navigator to archive it rather than copying it with Windows. This is a much safer method for copying a directory which may have links (aka shortcuts).

Archiving a project

Follow these steps to archive your project.

1. Open your project in the Project Navigator.

2. From the Project menu select Archive...

3. Select the name for the zip file. This is usually just the project name but you can modify it if you want to keep different versions. Save it to the Desktop, not the project directory!!

4. Click Save and this will create the file project_name.zip on the Desktop.

5. Copy this file to your backup storage: zip disk, memory stick, cats account, mail account, etc. Note that some mail services (e.g. Google) strip zip files from e-mails as a form of virus protection. This can usually be circumvented by changing the name of the extension , i.e. hello.zip --> hello.piz. You should test your backup storage mechanism by retrieving the zip file and following the steps below.

Restoring a project

Follow these steps to restore your project.

1. Retrieve your project zip file (rename it with the .zip extension if necessary).

2. Double click on the zip file.

3. Extract all the files (under the File menu) to the folder project_name on the Desktop. (Make sure they are being extracted to a folder on the Desktop, not the Desktop itself!)

4. To open the project double click on the file project_name.ise (This file should have a thumbnail that looks like the Project Navigator icon.) You can also open the Project Navigator by double clicking its icon on the Desktop and then selecting Open Project from the File menu and the finding the same file.
